E-Flight Blade MCX - First Look
Reviews

E-flight describes the mCX as an ultra micro coaxial helicopter but don’t let the micro size of this heli fool you, it’s a full 4 channel control, hobby quality ultra small helicopter. The mCX is available in two versions, a ready to fly (RTF) and a bind and fly (BNF). The RTF is exactly that, it comes with everything needed to fly right out of the box. The BNF is minus the radio and mates with several different radios. The mCX is using a Spektrum DSM2 technology and for our testing I used the BNF and mated with the LP5DSM that was provided with the Blade CX2.

The mCX comes well packaged with a high graphic display box and carry handle. Inside all components were surrounded with foam so there is little chance of shipping damage. A quick rundown of measurements gives us a total length of 7.9 inches height at 4.7 inches and the main rotors at 7.5 inch diameter. It weighs in at a mere 1 ounce including the flight battery. It has a slick look and is powered by 2 coreless motors.

The included flight battery is a lithium polymer (Li-Po) rated at 3.7 volts and 110 mAh. It’s extremely small and light yet easily gives a solid 8 minutes of runtime.

The charger is proprietary for the flight battery and is powered by 4 AA sized batteries although I would have liked to see an external DC supply (wall wart) or at least a jack on the charger for an optional supply. The upside is it can be considered child safe. It takes approximately 25- 40 minutes to recharge the flight battery depending on how discharged it is.

I’ll start the testing by saying I love my CX2 but the main problem is it’s hard to get a zero wind day. The mCX gives me the ability to fly indoors in the smaller rooms of my home. I have had at least 10 flights with the mCX and love it. It flies extremely stable which I’m sure is due in part to the coaxial rotor setup as well as the built in gyro. It reacted extremely smooth with stick control and I think the word crash is no longer in my vocabulary. I have flown before but still consider myself a novice and I had no problems putting this in the air and in complete control. The flight time is plenty long enough with the Li-Po battery and easily recharges quickly for the next round. It’s also basically interference free due to the DSM2 radio technology. One minor thing is that I did have to reverse servo control for both the aileron and elevator as compared to the CX2 but other than that I have no problem recommending the mCX to anyone even to those who have never flown before.

For more information visit E-flight or visit your local hobby shop.

Special thanks go out to Mike and Bill Grant at HobbyTown USA 716-833-7700 for supplying WNYRC.com with the mCx for testing.

Enjoy a little flight around my living room!

Team Associated RC12R5
Reviews

After running with a previous sponsor for a good length of time, I decided it was time for a change. When I received the kit, I notice the detail they put into the manual, parts layouts, and the spare parts diagram. I was very impressed from beginning.

Shocks
The shocks are the first part of the build. They feature a revolutionary design. They use what they call a thru-shaft. This type of design creates no rebound, thus being able to create an extremely efficient shock system. The kit I received had 1 defective thru shaft so I decided to not build the lateral shock. It uses a top and a bottom o-ring and is very easy to bleed.

Back End
The back suspension consisted of a new design for Associated, a link setup. It is a one piece link pivot setup. It makes it very easy to setup and has side screws to adjust the play in the lateral movement of the rear pod. It also uses the lateral shock previously mentioned. The pod plates are very straight, true, and stunning Associated blue. I didn’t like the tweak spring carriers included in the kit. They were very soft and had a lot of flex. I opted to use SpeedMerchant ones that I had laying around.

Differential
The diff is a basic large d-ring diff. It went together very smoothly with carbide balls. I wet sanded the rings with 800 grit to get a little more grip on the balls. When built, it felt like silk. Hopefully it will be able to stand up to the brushless torque.

Front Arms
Associated has revolutionized the front end system. They have set the standard for front arms since the late ‘80s. These arms feature a new design. They use aluminum bulkheads to which the arms attach. The arms are universal, left to right. With this setup, you can now shim out at the arm or at the wheel. It comes with titanium turnbuckles and is very easy to setup. I fitted mine with BMI Racing .020 front springs. The benefit of these is they don’t collapse and they are more linear than the standard springs.

Overall
The car was built with great quality and care. The carbon fiber is very crisp and clean and the countersinking is very accurate and precise. The fit of all the parts was spot on and was very easy to build. I equipped my car with Jaco Prism tires, a Futaba S9650 servo, and a Protoform Speed 12. I will be adding a LRP Sphere Comp speed control and a Spektrum micro receiver.

Calandra Racing Concepts Clik-Track Racing Barrier System
Announcements

First came fire hose but that was to easy to jump over. Next it was wooden boards, heavy, doesn't bend and many broken parts, ouch! Finally it was road rail system, nice to configure but it should have been named road launch system with cars flying everywhere.

Evolution, no revolution! Coming soon from Calandra Racing Concepts is the new "Clik-Track" Quick Connect Track Barrier System.

For years, Calandra Racing Concepts (CRC) Fasttrak Racing Carpet has been the standard for indoor carpet R/C racing. Now, the company that brings you the finest indoor racing surface releases the finest barrier system for R/C Cars. CRC "Clik-Track", a revolutionary new track border system that is easy to use, ultra-friendly on R/C cars and a snap to change, allowing quick layout changes.

Clik-Trak is a square pipe and is comprised of straights, 3 different bends or curves and short 1 foot "connector" pieces. The connector pieces slide snugly into the straights and curves, joining them securely. The connectors pieces also feature small "click" connectors buttons on each end, similar to those found on an EZ-Up canopy legs. Every straight and curve has a hole near the end to accept the "clicker" from the connector, just push the clicker down, insert the connector and "click" it into place.

Clik-Trak features 3 distinct corner pieces, each with a hole to accept the connectors; a 90 degree bend, a sharp 135 degree bend and a gentle 45 degree kink. Using these 3 different corner angles, almost any design track circuit can be built.

Clik-Trak is available in 2 different Trak-Pak sizes, small and large. The Small Trak-Pak includes enough borders to complete a track of approximately 2300 square feet. The Large Trak-Pak has enough to border to make a good road circuit on a track with the 3360 square feet. This is a rough estimate as lane width and complexity of the circuit effect the amount of pipe needed. Packaged boxes of additional straights, corners and connectors are available separately, so you can add as your needs change.

Square pipe and easy to put together and reconfigure plus the connectors fit on the inside so completely smooth. Revolution!

MRT PTX
Articles

Now available from MRT is the PTX personal transponder. The PTX is about half the size and half the weight of the AMB PT.

It features a very low current draw and will operate down to 2.volts. The case is available with or without mounting tabs and is 100% water and fuel proof.

The back is removable with 4 screws so a damaged power cord can easily be replaced.

Simply brilliant! For more information visit MRT on line at RCLAPS.com
